Office carpets get a lot of wear. People are always coming and going. Staff and clients will probably be eating in the office during lunches and meetings. On top of that, rainy weather is going to bring in wet, muddy shoes and boots. And, let’s face it, spills are going to happen. So, how do you remove stains from office carpets? Let’s talk about what to do.

Stain Prevention for your Office Carpets

While you can’t prevent all dirt from making a mess on your office carpets, the easiest ways to keep spills, stains, and dirt from leaving permanent spots is to tackle their clean up as so as you can. And preferably, right after they occur.

Simple Steps for Cleaning Office Carpets

Here are some simple steps to take care of your basic office carpet stains like mud, coffee, and food:

  1. Pick up or vacuum any debris when possible. From here, blot whatever you can with a clean cloth or paper towel. Try your best not to rub. Blotting is more gentle on the carpet fibers.
  2. With a little cool water and mild soap in a spray bottle, apply to the stain and blot some more until the cloth is clean. Repeat as necessary. Cool water is better than hot which can actually act to set the stain.
  3. If you still need a more powerful cleaner, apply a store bought carpet cleaner. Wait the time noted on the bottle and continue to blot until the stain can no longer be seen.

Things to Consider when Removing Food Stains from Carpet

Food stain removal requires extra considerations to be effective.

Here are some examples:

  • Oils will tend to set easier into the carpet fibers. To help soak them up, consider trying baking soda sprinkled on the spot. Wait until this has dried and vacuum it up. Continue with step number 2 above.
  • Gum can show up once in a while on an office carpet. To eliminate this type of stain, first, apply some ice to the area until it has solidified the gum. If you’d like, put the ice in a baggy to prevent it from melting into the carpet. Once the gum has become more solid, you should be able to scrape and chip it off the carpet. Once it has been completely removed, begin with step one above.
  • Wine or juice can certainly show up at a holiday office party or conference. The best way to approach this type of spill is first to blot the liquid up and then use club soda to release the stain and continue to blot. Repeat until your cloth appears clear. If there is still some residue coloring on the carpet fibers, step 3 above should help to diminish the stain considerably.

Keep your Office Carpets Clean Long-Term

When it comes to keeping carpets clean, it’s best to take care of spills and stains as they occur, and follow up with a deeper clean on a regular basis. Following these steps will help keep your office carpets looking their best for many years to come. We also recommend you test any carpet cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous spot to make sure your carpets are color safe.
