Having a clean floor in a commercial kitchen is essential to an overall hygienic food prep environment as well as an important safety step. In general, the best way to keep your commercial kitchen floors as clean as possible is with a dedicated cleaning schedule and process. But, do you know the best ways or how to clean a commercial kitchen floor? Keep reading to learn more.

Cleaning Flooring in a Commercial Kitchen

A commercial kitchen floor will see a lot of food debris, spills, and foot traffic during a work shift. Depending on the amount of grime the floor accumulates – and from what substances – can determine the way a commercial kitchen floor is cleaned and how often.

It’s important to think about safety, hygiene, and appearance when it comes to your commercial kitchen floors. Your flooring material will likely be linoleum, vinyl, or tile. These surfaces can trap dirt and grease, and become slippery. Here are some of the most important points to consider in a commercial kitchen environment.

  1. Debris Removal Start with a broom and dustpan to gather all the food debris possible.
  2. Cleaning Solutions The type of flooring in your kitchen will determine what type of cleaning products you can use. Enzymatic cleaners will work well for slightly greasy messes. Alkaline cleaners are more effective for greasy messes and oil stains, but can be a harsher product for a flooring surface. Acidic cleaners are good for hard water stains and mineral deposits. Ammonia solutions are great for degreasing and overall cleaning while disinfecting for certain conditions. And bleach is also a good overall cleaner and also a disinfectant for serious instances. Always read the directions and understand the applications before use and use caution with more powerful products.
  3. Mix the Solution(s) Mop the floor with a cleaning solution and water mixture. While the floor is wet, scrub the grout as necessary with a long-handled scrub brush. If the surface needs another mopping, mix a clean bucket of solution and clean the floor surface again.
  4. Rinse as necessary Either rinse the floor with a mop and fresh water or use a squeegee and fresh water, and work the dirty solution towards a floor drain.
  5. Dry Allow the floor surface to dry completely before staff or guest entrance.

How to Clean Greasy Commercial Kitchen Floor Tiles

If the commercial kitchen floor surface doesn’t come completely clean with the chosen solution to mop the entire floor, apply a degreaser. It could be necessary to apply the degreasing solution in an isolated location or over the entire space.

Wait for the solution to activate, if required, and repeat the steps above to fully degrease the kitchen floors. Degreasers can be more severe, so it’s important to follow proper procedures for each different solution and fully rinse the product off to avoid surface damage.
