It’s that time of year, right? Time for some summertime cleaning at your firehouse. This is the perfect time of year to clean up your work and living spaces. And it’s a great time to bring everything outside without worry about snow or cold weather. The entire firehouse will probably need a good scrubbing after a dirty and wet winter and spring season, so you know there is going to be plenty to clean up. After you have moved out the trucks, move out any other equipment and tools as well. Then it’s time to get busy cleaning up. Here’s our advice for how to clean a firehouse.
How to Clean a Firehouse
Firehouse Cleaning Tasks
If you want to do any organizing and cleaning of closets, cabinets, and storage areas in your firehouse, now would be a good time to also get that done. You can make a mess and sweep it up later when you tackle the floors.
From here, we always recommend starting with wet cleaning of all areas in your firehouse first, then moving on to polishing, while leaving the floors for last. For example, cleaning the showers, sinks, countertops, and toilets in your firehouse before moving on to polishing windows and mirrors. From there, you can wrap up by dusting light fixtures, flat surfaces, and banisters.
After these areas are cleaned and polished, you can focus on the floors. There might be a variety of flooring surfaces in your firehouse…from vinyl flooring to carpet to concrete. Take into account the cleaning process for each. You can vacuum both the vinyl flooring and the carpet. Remember to mop the vinyl well in order to sanitize these areas thoroughly. With the concrete, you will want to sweep them well. After a good sweeping, consider hosing down concrete floors to eliminate any remaining dirt.
Cleaning Firehouse Equipment and Supplies
At this point, everything in your firehouse is really starting to shine. However, now is also the perfect time to review your cold weather equipment and supplies. Take some time and make sure the shovels and snowblower are all cleaned up and ready to be stored.
Remember to cover and store away any bags or buckets of sand and salt. Consider refilling these buckets to get ready for next winter. If you need more supplies for next season, add these to your list to stock up before you forget.
Restocking your Cleaning Materials
If you haven’t already done so, now is a good time to restock all of your other firehouse supplies, too. For example: paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, dish soap, cleaning supplies, and garage items. When large groups of people are involved in maintaining a clean firehouse, a checklist can be super helpful to keep all the duties organized and accounted for.
A Quick Review Checklist:
- Clear out the firehouse
- Review equipment and make repairs
- Organize closets, cabinets and work spaces
- Clean bathrooms, kitchen and bunk areas
- Clean and organize garage and work areas
- Vacuum or sweep floors / Scrub floors
- Stock Up on Supplies – both in the firehouse and the garage

You might even consider making a checklist for each season to keep on top of certain cleaning and organization projects. And a great way for everyone to chip in with your firehouse cleaning is to assign jobs to all the crew during each shift.
After you have addressed the firehouse itself– it’s time to get busy washing the trucks! Make it a great day in the nice warm summer weather. And, enjoy your nice clean firehouse.
