When you walk into your doctor’s office, you expect it to be clean, tidy, and as germ-free as possible. You are coming in to either get healthy or stay healthy, after all. It’s important to note, many people coming into the doctor’s office are sick. So, keeping your medical office and waiting rooms extra clean and sanitized is incredibly important to ensure germs aren’t spread around. With that being said, where should you focus your cleaning for your medical office? The obvious places like patient waiting rooms and bathrooms must be disinfected and remain picked up at all times. Also, the exam rooms should be cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis throughout the day. But, what about the rest of the office? It’s more than dusting and vacuuming in the usual type of office workplace. Here’s what you need to know about how to maintain a clean medical office.

Hidden Germs in a Medical Office

A lot of germs and illnesses are going to be brought in to your medical office by your patients (and occasionally your staff). There are hidden places throughout the office and patient areas that you might not think of or notice need cleaning.

A few areas you might not have considered:

  • Kids’ toys, books, chairs and tables
  • Armrests on chairs, both in the waiting rooms and in offices and patient exam rooms
  • Water fountains
  • Door handles throughout your medical office
  • Pens and chart boards

Medical Office Cleaning: The Essentials

On top of this list, you want to also make sure windows, doors, countertops, and light switches are smudge and germ-free. These areas can tend to get skipped if they don’t look outright dirty.

There are many areas that might go without normal cleaning because they might look clean. But germs linger on all surfaces that have been touched or breathed on. Both on areas that look dirty and that appear clean to the naked eye. Wiping down all surface that patients and staff come in contact with is the best defense against spreading germs and illnesses.

Once you have focused on the reception and patient areas, you’ll want to make sure you address your staff and physician areas. These are the people treating your ill patients and could be carrying the germs with them. Make sure the offices are more than dusted; the furniture and desk areas should also be wiped down and sanitized, making sure to catch the keyboard areas, phones, and chairs.

The staff desk areas should be addressed the same way, and kept sanitized and tidy. A messy work space will make it difficult to keep it clean and disinfected. You want to make cleaning these areas an easy process to ensure it gets taken care of effortlessly and often.

Sanitizing Supplies & Scheduling

On top of cleaning on a regular and consistent basis, you want to make sure hygiene and cleaning supplies are kept stocked and available at all times. Consider keeping these items at desks, restrooms and reception areas:

  • Sanitizing and hand cleaning gels or sprays
  • Sanitizing and disinfectant wipes
  • Plenty of soap
  • Disinfecting cleaning sprays
  • Paper towels

Consider providing a schedule for the staff to review patient and restroom areas for cleanliness to also help keep your medical office looking its best.

Remember the Basics when Cleaning your Medical Office

And, like always, make sure to dust and vacuum, empty trash receptacles, and stock supplies on a regular basis. Dirt and grime linger everywhere, so it’s important not to skip your cleaning basics.
