Do you know the special cleaning needs of your veterinary hospital? Many dogs, cats, and other pets – not to mention owners of these pets – come through your doors every day. Along with your veterinarians and vet techs, most of your facility is going to be high traffic. You are going to want to clean your veterinary clinic daily and stay on top of messes as they come up. Here is our cleaning checklist for your veterinary hospital so you can be aware of the top places to focus on when cleaning.

Waiting Room

When considering your daily thorough cleaning of your veterinary hospital, start with the waiting room. This area will be extra dirty with animals that come in that are shedding or slobbering, or ill animals that might vomit on the floor or have an accident. You’ll probably come across lots of slobber left behind at dog height on chairs, benches, and windows, too. Make sure to address all these areas with a safe and effective disinfectant. Remember to also sweep all the animal hair and dust in the waiting areas, too. Don’t forget to address the doorway area into the clinic, especially during inclement weather since there will likely be a good bit of dirt and paw prints dragged in.

Once you have attended to the seating area, make sure to focus on the restroom in the client waiting area, checking behind doors and in the nooks and crannies for pet hair that likes to float around and hide. From here you can move to the reception area. You might not need as much slobber removal, but make sure to disinfect countertops, chair handles, desks and phones. Include the kitchenette or coffee type areas in this clean up as well. A vet clinic needs special attention to disinfecting, so be diligent with any surfaces humans and animals are in contact with, especially when food and drink are about.

Pet Exam Rooms

The animal exam rooms are next in line. You’ll want to follow a similar procedure as you did in the waiting area. Disinfect the countertops, pet scales, chairs, and sink areas. Remember to include handles on cabinets and doors while grabbing the areas around door handles and light switches when you come into the room.

Pet Surgery and Treatment Rooms

Next, you’ll come to the back areas where more complicated veterinary animal procedures take place. Medical waste needs to be handled by instruction from the veterinary clinic following proper rules and laws. But, again, you are going to want to be diligent about tackling any pet slobber, accidents, and all around pet messes. If there are kennels in this location, make sure to sanitize them and wipe them out to eliminate grime and pet hair, always using safe and effective cleaning products.

Veterinary Staff Areas

There will probably be a staff kitchen, restroom, and office area. Make sure to address these well. Areas with food and mess from coffee in the morning through lunch time meals need to be picked up and sanitized. Bathrooms need to be kept tidy, sanitary, and well-stocked. And, similar to your front reception area, take care to sanitize the phones, chair handles, desks and doors in staff offices. Keeping these areas clean helps the staff run a smooth and happy office.

To wrap up your vet clinic cleaning, empty all waste cans and replace the liners. Then vacuum and mop up all tile floors. Your veterinary hospital will shine and smell great after this thorough and detailed cleaning, and pet owners will feel confident in the level of health services you provide starting from the moment they walk through your doors!
